Five Questions And A Playlist:  Halo Maud

Paris based multi-instrumentalist Halo Maud lands on these shores this week following a critically acclaimed debut release on the esteemed Heavenly Recordings. Je Suis Une Île’s keyboard and synth led ethereal pop also touches on some of the best parts of prog and psych rock throughout.

Ahead of her headline shows across the UK this week, we caught up with her to grab a playlist of her influences and to find out about the support for musicians in her hometown.

Tickets for Halo Maud can be found here.

Who were your favourite bands / artists as a teenager?

Radiohead, Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette.

When did you realise music could be a career?

I never asked myself this question.

Do you have a job outside of music?

Not anymore, but I used to have different jobs, in shops or in offices. I feel really lucky to spend my time making music now. Outside of Halo Maud, I also play in other bands and that helps me make a living.

How well is live music supported in your hometown / city?

Unfortunately many small and cool venues have been closed recently in Paris, for administrative reasons (Espace B, Pop In, Mécanique Ondulatoire, Batofar) and this is really bad news because all these venues were promoting diversity in music, and the truth is that there is a real audience for that.

We really need to stop thinking indie music is only intended for a very few specialised insiders. I'm not desperate at all, I'm even very optimistic, but there is a lot to do, especially in France, and especially in Paris where everything is becoming more and more expensive and standardised.

If you could make one change to the music industry what would it be?

A shot of music passion and two pills of boldness every morning for every radio music programmer and labels' artistic directors.
